Boerenjongens = Farmer, Boys?
Everything has a name. You, me, trees, and so do companies. Every name has a story and so does: Boerenjongens. Admittedly, from first glance, Boerenjongens doesn’t sound like a communication agency. It loosely translates to “farmer boys” in Dutch, and if an image of a bunch of people typing away in a barn, surrounded by chickens, doesn’t bring a smile to your face, nothing will. Our office is a barn where wonderful ideas are created.
A lot of people wonder why Boerenjongens is named Boerenjongens? I mean, it’s the name of pickled fruits for brandy made from raisins in the north of the Netherlands. And oh yeah, it’s also a popular coffeeshop in our capital Amsterdam (an interesting challenge for our SEO). The name Boerenjongens didn’t just come out of the blue. Boerenjongens literally has a meaning, but also figuratively. Literally, the name Boerenjongens is actually quite logical. Rens and Mark who started the company ten years ago are both boys from the countryside. Rens from the Achterhoek, Mark from the Bollenstreek. Whilst figuratively, “farmer boys” sound like the no-nonsense type of people who get stuff done. And those are exactly the character traits of the Boerenjongens. They work with their healthy common sense and stand for decisiveness. Also, do not forget, Boerenjongens is different from standard communication companies in work attitude and results. Mark left and after a while and Dennis took over, and nobody suits the characteristics of Boerenjongens better, even though he is not a farmer. However, Dennis may not be a farmer, but he is a Rotterdammer: Straightforward and no idea is too crazy for him.
So, the name “Boerenjongens” has a whole story behind it, and a meaning that is still carried throughout the company. Because everyone at Boerenjongens, has a bit of the “farmers” mentality. Our office is the stable, and us? We are a bunch of hard-working clucking chickens.
